The Olav Path, or Gudbrandsdalsleden, has been the main route from Oslo to Nidaros (modern-day Trondheim) since the Middle Ages. It is a 643-kilometer-long, well-marked path that offers beautiful and varied scenery. The Gudbrandsdalsleden was one of the first pilgrimage routes in Norway to be “reopened” as a modern pilgrimage trail. Walking this path, you follow in the footsteps of countless pilgrims who, for over ten centuries, journeyed to Trondheim — to the resting place of Saint Olav.
The Olav Path is just one of several pilgrim paths in the nordic countries. We offer hikes along five of them. Which one is best for you? We compare them on the 'About' page.
The total distance from Oslo to Trondheim is 643 kilometers. Nordic Pilgrim offers tours along the final 415 kilometers of the Gudbrandsdalsleden, starting in Lillehammer.
The Olav Path is a moderately challenging to challenging route, with both easier and more demanding sections. The Dovre plateau, in particular, can be tough — especially in bad weather. There are also some stages between Lillehammer and Dovre that are demanding. Always check the forecast before you start your hike! Good equipment and planning are essential, and you should be in good physical condition.
A pilgrim hike, especially the longer ones, can be physically demanding. Good training and proper equipment are essential. For some trails, including sections of Olav Path and St. Olav Path, we also recommend using hiking poles to help with balance and reduce strain on knees during climbs and descents.
Every country has its own SOS or emergency app, which you should install on your phone. This allows emergency services to track your location if needed. And make sure to add us as your contact, so we can follow your progress along the route. You can always call us if you need assistance.
Accommodation along the route varies from simple rooms to cabins, small hostels, and hotels. Nordic Pilgrim selects all accommodations with care. However, standards differ, as this is a sparsely populated area and options are still somewhat limited.
While it doesn't reach very high altitudes, the constant ascents and descents out of valleys make it a strenuous and challenging hike, requiring good basic fitness. There may be snow in the mountains, often until mid-June. If there is still snow on Dovrefjell mountain range we strongly advice against crossing it by foot, take the train instead.
The Dovre plateau can be hiked from June to August. Between Lillehammer and Dovre, and again from Oppdal onwards, the season is slightly longer — from May to September.

The pilgrim centers along the way provide excellent information as well. However, if you’d like assistance with planning or booking – or need general information – please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Many pilgrims choose to travel with their four-legged friend — and this is possible! Most accommodations accept dogs, though it’s best to check in advance. However, special regulations apply when bringing a dog into Norway, and some breeds are prohibited. Currently, the following breeds are not allowed in the country: Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Fila Brasileiro, Tosa Inu, Dogo Argentino, and Ceskoslovenský vlčiak.
Thermos/water bottle, backpack, rain gear, warm clothing, good hiking shoes (preferably waterproof), first aid kit and blister plasters, passport. Trekking poles can be very useful. Also make sure you have valid travel insurance.
